20 years of the Academy

The Academy of the Concertgebouw Orchestra is celebrating its twentieth year this season. In those twenty years, over a hundred musicians have rounded off their musical studies with a unique opportunity to train under the orchestra’s wing. And we’re celebrating with a jubilee concert on 6 June in the Recital Hall.

Success stories

In 2002, musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra decided to offer talented young musicians a chance to train as an orchestra musician. It started with one or two string players each season.

Twenty years on, the Academy has grown into a renowned educational institution. A full-time programme that includes masterclasses, chamber-music projects and individual coaching in addition to playing in orchestral productions. Every year hundreds of young musicians from all over Europe compete to take part in the programme. There is currently room for twelve talented students.

The Academy has trained dozens of successful orchestral musicians. Most are playing in professional orchestras, and no fewer than fourteen are now members of the Concertgebouw Orchestra

The Academy is fully supported by the Foundation Concertgebouworkest, which receives donations from, among others, Ammodo, the Dutch Masters Foundation, the Swiss Friends of the Concertgebouworkest, Don Quixote Foundation, De Salon, private donors and a number of Named Funds.
