Klaus Mäkelä is in Amsterdam more and more these days. In an interview for Preludium, taken during a stroll through the city, the orchestra's future chief conductor talks about visual art, photography and the concerts he’s conducting here in January and February. Meanwhile, Mäkelä has his camera in his hand.

From 30 October to 5 November, the Concertgebouw Orchestra is taking part in the Week of “Bequeath to Culture” (Nalaten aan cultuur). Together with other cultural institutions, we will be spreading the word about the possibility of bequeathing a donation to a cultural institution.

Since 2022 the Concertgebouw Orchestra has a new global partner: Booking.com. Every year De Salon, the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s business club, awards the Prix de Salon to an orchestra member with a special musical plan. Our beloved honorary conductor Bernard Haitink died on 21 October 2021. After sharing a rich history spanning sixty-five years, we can rightly speak of the end of an era. Willem Mengelberg (1871-1951) succeeded Willem Kes as principal conductor in 1895. For fifty years Mengelberg stood at the helm of the orchestra and was of great significance for music culture in the Netherlands.

It all started when his grandmother gave him a violin. Now, too, the special instrument the our orchestra's leader Vesko Eschkenazy plays is of great significance to his life and career.
