Klaus Mäkelä Conducts Mahler’s Third symphony
Gustav Mahler’s great vision for orchestra, choirs and soloists
Het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
Today’s greatest conductors bring symphonic masterpieces to life in the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s E Series.
The E series is where renowned conductors bring symphonic music to life. And, of course, Klaus Mäkelä, our future chief conductor, has the place of honour, conducting Mahler’s kaleidoscopic Third Symphony. Riccardo Chailly, our conductor emeritus, will take on the Herculean task of guiding listeners through Schönberg’s massive and moving Gurre-Lieder.
Listeners can enjoy two of Bruckner’s symphonies: Christian Thielemann will be at the helm for the Eighth, and our honorary guest conductor Iván Fischer will pair Bruckner’s Third with the music of Bach. Speaking of Bach, Trevor Pinnock will turn his attention to that composer’s St John Passion. John Eliot Gardiner is another distinguished Briton who, for years, has been a regular guest at the Concertgebouw Orchestra. He will precede Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem with choral music that Heinrich Schütz composed some 200 years earlier. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony will be conducted by Joana Mallwitz, Santtu-Matias Rouvali will lead Schubert’s Sixth.
