Brahms NOS. 1 and 3
Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducting
Sir John Eliot Gardiner brings a ‘Brahms for our time’, emphasising dance, seduction and intimacy in Brahms’s symphonies.
The renowned conductor Herbert Blomstedt leads the Concertgebouworkest in the Symphony No. 3 by Johannes Brahms. You can watch the performance with or without Herbert Blomstedt’s commentary.
Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 3 opens energetically, like a sturdy steamship ploughing its way through the waves. Various critics heard a strong resemblance to Beethoven at the premiere of the Third Symphony; its conductor Hans Richter himself nicknamed it Brahms’s ‘Eroica’. Brahms was then classified as someone who did not appear to be concerned by the artistic trends of his own time, but nothing could be further from the truth. Harmonically speaking the Third Symphony is one of Brahms’s most adventurous works, with a number of unexpected changes of key and an almost nervous alternation of major and minor.
Herbert Blomstedt has been a welcome guest conductor with the Concertgebouworkest since 1983. At the age of ninety plus, with enormous mental and physical presence, verve and artistic drive, Herbert Blomstedt continues to be at the helm of all leading international orchestras. You can watch the performance of Brahms’s Third Symphony with or without Herbert Blomstedt’s commentary.
