About this concert
Luciano Berio (1925-2003) was undoubtedly the most audience-friendly of the post-war generation of avant-gardist composers. In 1968, he surprised friends and foes alike with his Sinfonia, a five-part symphony for eight voices and orchestra. Spoken and sung texts, original sounds, familiar and unfamiliar musical fragments: Berio pieced them all together into a fascinating collage – as complex as it was accessible, as sensual as it was challenging. Sinfonia nestled itself in the musical memory and has become an integral part of music history.
Sinfonia is a monument and deserves a monumental performance in a monumental hall. The newly reopened Gashouder offers the perfect ambiance for this fascinating collage.
