About this concert
The Creation is one of the best-known evening-long works from Joseph Haydn’s last years of glory. The oratorio depicts – or rather celebrates – the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis. Inspired by Handel’s oratorios, which Haydn had heard on his trips to London, the brilliant composer set the biblical account of creation to music. The masterpiece was premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 19 March 1799 and was an instant success. It still is to this day – after all, The Creation is timeless.
Philippe Herreweghe is leading the Concertgebouw Orchestra, his own Collegium Vocale Gent and a number of outstanding soloists in what is sure to be a special experience. With Herreweghe’s skill in conjuring the most beautiful timbres and dramatic expressiveness from both orchestra and choir, you can be sure to experience Haydn’s beloved Creation as if it were brand new.
