Andrew Manze

After reading classics at Cambridge University, Manze studied the violin and rapidly became a leading specialist in the world of historical performance practice. He became associate director of the Academy of Ancient Music in 1996 and then artistic director of the English Concert from 2003 to 2007.  

From 2006 to 2014, Manze was principal conductor and artistic director of the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra. He also served as guest conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Norwegian Radio Orchestra. 

Since 2014, Manze has been chief conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie in Hanover, his contract extending until the Summer of 2023. Manze and the orchestra have made two successful tours to China and have embarked on a major series of award-winning recordings, focussing on works of Mendelssohn and Mozart. As principal guest conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra since 2018, he has recorded all symphonies of Vaughan Villiams.

As a guest conductor, Manze has long-standing relationships with leading orchestras including the Munich Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and Camerata Salzburg. He is also a regular guest at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York City. 

Andrew Manze’s first appearance with the Concertgebouw Orchestra was in 2017. The most recent collaboration was a programme featuring works by Elgar and Vaughan Williams, in November 2023.
