Kirill Petrenko

Kirill Petrenko, chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2019, first attracted international attention when, as music director of the Meininger Staatstheater, he conducted Wagner’s entire Ring des Nibelungen.

Petrenko was born in Omsk in 1972. Following his training as a conductor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, he worked as an assistant and conductor at the city’s Volksoper; afterwards he was music director at the Meininger Theater from 1999 to 2002.

From 2002 to 2007, Kirill Petrenko was general music director of the Komische Oper Berlin. He has also appeared at he Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera New York, and the Opéra Bastille in Paris, amomg others, and conducted the Winer Philharmoniker. 

From 2013 to 2015, he conducted a new production of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival. 

In 2013, Kirill Petrenko also took up his post as general music director of the Bayerische Staatsoper. That same year he made his debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducting Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, and Rimsky-Korsakovs Sheherazade.

Ten years on, in 2022/2023, Kirill Petrenko returns to the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
