Matthias Pintscher began his musical training in conducting, studying with Peter Eötvös. After he became more successful as a composer, he divided his time equally between conducting and composition.

Pintscher joined the composition department of the Juilliard School of Music in New York in 2014.

As a conductor, Pintscher has a great affinity with contemporary music, alongside composers such as Beethoven, Berlioz, Bruckner, Ravel, Debussy and the Second Viennese School.

Matthias Pintscher is music director of the Kansas City Symphony since the 2024-25 season and has been principal conductor of the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra since 2016. From 2013 to 2024 Pintscher was music director of the Ensemble intercontemporain.

As a guest conductor, Pintscher has led many orchestras in Europe, the United States and Australia, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
