Opening Night at the NDSM wharf

The festive season opening of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has become a tradition in recent years and takes place every year at a special location. In 2023, the free open-air concert took place at the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam-Noord. The infectious program full of dance and rhythm consisted of famous pieces such as Ravel's Bolero and Smetana's The Vltava.

On this page you can listen to the concert stream of Opening Night 2023 conducted by Gianandrea Noseda. This broadcast can be viewed until Monday 16 September 2024. Have fun watching and listening!

Programme

With the overture to Johann Strauss's cheerful operetta Die Fledermaus, we immediately find ourselves in a festive Viennese atmosphere. The jaunty waltz that erupts after two and a half minutes will be familiar to most! In The Vltava, Smetana's ode to his Bohemian homeland, a mighty river winds audibly past hills, villages and a peasant festival. Sitting still is probably no longer possible with Borodin's well-known Polovetzer dances and the optimistic Overture for orchestra written by the Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz in the middle of the Second World War. After the world premiere of the crazy Madhouse by the young up-and-coming Dutchman Xavier van de Poll, we conclude with the irresistible and uplifting sounds of Ravel's Bolero. Olé!

Opening Night 2024

On 13 September 2024, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will descend on the Nelson Mandela Park in Amsterdam-Zuidoost for the Opening Night with, among others, rapper Sor and conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
