Maartje-Maria den Herder

Maartje-Maria den Herder joined the cello section of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in September 2014.

She was a member of the Academy of the Concertgebouworkest during the 2005–6 season. Prior to that, she studied with Elias Arizcuren and her brother Jeroen den Herder at the Utrecht Conservatory, and with Dmitri Ferschtman at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where she graduated with honours in June 2007. She has participated in masterclasses with Natalia Gutman, Ivan Monighetti, Heinrich Schiff and Janos Starker.

Den Herder has won prizes at the Princess Christina Competition, the competition of the Foundation for Young Musical Talent in the Netherlands and Cello Centraal. At the first National Cello Competition in 2006, she won second prize, the Audience Prize and the prize for best interpretation of a required work. 

Maartje-Maria den Herder gained orchestral experience in the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also worked regularly as a substitute with the Nieuw Ensemble and the Combattimento Consort.

Den Herder has also given solo performances with the Radio Symphony Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta and, in 2010, the Residentie Orchestra – in collaboration with the Nederlands Dans Theater – in the world premiere of Philip Glass’s Double Concerto.
