Marc Daniel van Biemen

Marc Daniel van Biemen joined the first violin section of the Concertgebouw Orchestra at 24 in May, 2012, having completed the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker. He has served as guest concertmaster of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Verbier Festival Orchestra, the Yale Philharmonia in Carnegie Hall under Krzysztof Penderecki and the Orchestra Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker. 

As a soloist he has performed with orchestras such as the Limburg Symphony Orchestra, Solisten van het Residentie Orkest en het Haags Jeugdorkest. 

In his book Violist (in Dutch) published in May 2023 by Thomas Rap, Van Biemen speaks candidly about his background and his life as a professional musician.  

Van Biemen has collaborated with artists such as Leonidas Kavakos, Janine Jansen, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Murray Perahia, Leif Ove Andsnes, Torleif Thedéen, Colin Carr, Ilya Gringolts, Alexander Kerr, Maxim Rysanov, Rainer Moog, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Julien Quentin, Andreas Ottensammer, Henrik Schwarz and Hauschka. He is a member of Camerata RCO and primarius of the Alma Quartet, which won the Prix de Salon in 2014 and released four highly praised albums. In 2017 the quartet’s debut cd, Schulhoff Complete String Quartets, was awarded a Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. 

Marc Daniel van Biemen received his first musical lessons from his father Wybo van Biemen, and continued studying privately with Jaap van Zweden and Herman Krebbers. In 2005 Van Biemen went to study with Sidney Harth at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh; in 2007 he was accepted at the Yale School of Music where he received his Certificate in Performance with Syoko Aki. 

Van Biemen won second prize at the Dutch National Violin Competition Oskar Back and a special prize at the Fritz Kreisler Violin Competition.
