With a celebrated performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion on 30 March, we began our annual residency at Baden-Baden’s Easter Festival, taking over from the Berliner Philharmoniker. In the years to come, we’ll return each spring to give several concerts under the baton of Klaus Mäkelä at the prestigious festival.

On Friday 27 and Sunday 29 March, our chief conductor designate already led us in Bach’s St Matthew Passion at The Concertgebouw. On Monday 30 March, we took to the stage of the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden — the imposing concert hall at the heart of the Osterfestspiele (Easter Festival), one of the world’s most celebrated classical music festivals.
In addition to the St Matthew Passion, we treated the festival audience to Bruch’s First Violin Concerto with Daniel Lozakovich followed by Mahler’s Fifth Symphony on 1 April, and Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony on 2 April. Musicians from the orchestra also performed in various chamber music formations at the Kurhaus and in the Malersaal of the historic Hotel Messmer until 4 April.
Among those present at this special occasion were donors from the Swiss Global Friends and participants in the annual ‘Masterreis’ (Master Tour) — loyal friends of the orchestra who thus had the opportunity to experience this historic milestone at first hand.
Take a look at the photos below from the Concertgebouw Orchestra's St Matthew Passion performances in Amsterdam and Baden-Baden, conducted by Klaus Mäkelä.
