About this concert

The Concertgebouw Orchestra is looking forward to a special residency at the Essen Philharmonie, contributing three symphonic concerts and three chamber music concerts in the 2022-23 season. This exciting collaboration kicks off with a festive programme conducted by Alain Altinoglu.

Two nonconformist soloists from the north will be sharing the stage: the Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst, artist in residence with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, artist in residence with the Essen Philharmonie. The programme is anything but arctic, though, with the jazz inflections of Ravel’s warm-blooded Piano Concerto in G Major blending seamlessly with a colourful mosaic of dances for clarinet and orchestra. The concert closes with radiant music from Bernstein’s West Side Story – quite rightly an audience favourite.
