Bijlmer Klassiek opens adventurous new season with Lou Lichtveld

Bijlmer Klassiek, our cross-genre collaboration with Bijlmer Parktheater in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, is launching a new season. On Sunday 27 September at 11.00 a.m., the spotlight falls on the Dutch-Surinamese polymath Lodewijk (Lou) Lichtveld (1903–1996): writer, politician, resistance fighter, organist and composer.
Musicians from our orchestra will perform several of the works of Lou Lichtveld, including Songs of Kalua and the score for Joris Ivens’ celebrated film Rain (Regen), accompanied by a screening of the film itself. The concert will be preceded by an engaging introduction by writer, poet, literary scholar and Surinamist Michiel van Kempen. The performers are Marleen Asberg (voice and violin), Frederik Boits (viola), Benedikt Enzler (cello), Vincent Cortvrint (flute) and Sandrine Chatron (harp).

Bijlmer Klassiek 2026-27 season
This season’s remaining concerts in the Bijlmer Klassiek series are:
- Sunday 29 november: Confluence – with Hamid Reza Behzadian (Indian slide guitar), Asmae Amaddaou (spoken word) and musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
- Saturday 6 March: Songs and sounds – with singer-songwriter Nana Adjoa and musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
- SUnday 30 May: Crossing over with Shishani van Afrika naar Europa en terug – from Africa to Europe and back again with singer-songwriter Shishani and musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Bijlmer Klassiek
At Bijlmer Klassiek, encounters between artists and audiences lead to remarkable fusions and exciting contrasts. Musicians from a wide range of genres and backgrounds work closely with members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in an annual series of unique, boundary-pushing concerts. In 2022, the orchestra embraced the series by taking it over from its violist Michael Gieler, who had already been organising the concerts together with Bijlmer Parktheater for nine years.
