Concertgebouworkest House to be opened by the mayor of Amsterdam
The official opening of Concertgebouworkest House, the new home of the Concertgebouworkest, at Gabriël Metsustraat 16 in Amsterdam, will take place on Saturday 19 January. Mayor of the City of Amsterdam Femke Halsema is to perform the official opening. Various opening festivities are planned around this date for the neighbours, patrons and relations of the orchestra.
The Concertgebouworkest is moving into Concertgebouworkest House shortly after its 130th anniversary. This historical event is fulfilling a long cherished dream. Now, orchestra, staff and public will be able to meet in this municipal monument on the Museumplein, within a stone’s throw of The Concertgebouw. The building from 1908, designed by the eminent Dutch architect H.P. Berlage, has been renovated, restored and provided with new-build elements to meet all requirements of the orchestra. To make this dream come true, the orchestra managed to raise €10 million from private individuals, funds and companies. An additional €1,2 million has been raised for activities in Concertgebouworkest House.
The Concertgebouworkest musicians will henceforth be able to prepare their orchestra pieces or chamber music programmes in the ten acoustically insulated music studios of Concertgebouworkest House – instead of having to rely on renting space elsewhere as previously the case. The Amsterdam Hall provides a perfect space for chamber music, introductions to concerts, auditions and educational activities. Concertgebouworkest House also has reception rooms, offices and conference rooms, and a common room where musicians, staff and relations of the orchestra can meet. Starting in the new season, workshops for schools will be held at Concertgebouworkest House as well as scheduling a public event every month.
Besides the opening activities for patrons and relations of the orchestra, local residents are welcome to view the new building while enjoying a fresh croissant and cup of coffee on the mornings of 17, 18 and 19 January. On these mornings live coverage from Concertgebouworkest House will be broadcast via radio and TV.
Thursday 17 January, from 7 to 9 a.m.: Concertgebouworkest House is open to the neighbourhood, with national TV coverage by Wakker Nederland on NPO1, and reporting for KRO-NCRV programme De ochtend van 4 via NPO Radio 4.
Friday 18 January, from 7 to 9 a.m.: Concertgebouworkest House is open to the neighbourhood, with reporting by local broadcaster AT5 (to be broadcast at a later date).
Saturday, 19 January, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Concertgebouworkest House is open to the neighbourhood, and from 10 am to 2 pm will be hosting a direct broadcast of Een goedemorgen met... by AVROTROS via NPO Radio 4.
From 17 to 20 January, a striking cube-shaped object will be present on the Museumplein that frames a direct view of Concertgebouworkest House, which will be beautifully illuminated for the occasion.
