Teodor Currentzis

Teodor Currentzis was born in Athens and moved to Russia in the early 1990s. After studying piano, violin and composition he took up conducting classes with Ilja Musin in St. Petersburg. His first major post was as music director of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre from 2004 to 2010. It was during this period that Curentzis founded musicAeterna and the musicAeterna Chamber Choir, both of which he still leads as artistic director. Both ensembles moved with Currentzis to Perm when he was appointed artistic director of the Perm Opera in 2011. In 2019 Currentzis stepped down from this role in order to further the artistic development of musicAeterna.

In 2016 Opernwelt named Currentzis ‘conductor of the year’. He has been chief conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart since 2018.

As guest conductor Teodor Currentzis has performed with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. In the 2022/23 season, Currentzis will make his debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducting Mahler’s Fourth Symphony.
