On 13 and 14 October, Gianandrea Noseda will conduct the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in two concerts of Italian works, some of which have been unjustly neglected. The concert on Thursday 13 October, entitled In Depth, is the first in a series of ‘unique listening experiences’ that the orchestra is presenting this season. Included on the programme is Luigi Dallapiccola's Partita from 1932. Before Noseda conducts the piece in its entirety, he will demonstrate just how firmly rooted Partita is in Italy’s rich musical tradition, illustrating his talk with excerpts from the piece played live. The piece’s lovely final movement, based on a medieval lullaby, will feature Dutch-Iranian soprano Lilian Farahani, who is making her debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Italian tradition and Gustav Klimt
On Friday 14 October, the Concertgebouw Orchestra will pair Dallapiccola’s Partita with Ottorino Respighi’s colourful Metamorphoseon, another work closely bound to Italian musical traditions, as well as Igor Stravinsky’s Monumentum, an orchestral arrangement of three madrigals by Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613). During this concert, which will have surtitles as well as projected images, Gianandrea Noseda will also conduct a new commissioned work by Viennese composer Bernd Richard Deutsch, Phantasma. It was inspired by the Beethoven Frieze, a large-scale wall painting in Vienna by Gustav Klimt. This Netherlands premiere is the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s contribution to the exhibition Golden Boy Gustav Klimt, which opens on 7 October in the Van Gogh Museum.

Before the 14 October concert, Erwin Roebroeks will give an introductory talk in the Choir Hall. Right after the concert, audience members will have the opportunity to ask the conductor, soloist and an orchestra member your questions during the Meet the Artists session in the Spiegelzaal.

Gianandrea Noseda and Dallapiccola's Partita
Gianandrea Noseda has for years been a champion of the music of Luigi Dallapiccola, who is an important link between early-twentieth-century Italian composers like Respighi and Malipiero and the post-war avant-garde that includes Luigi Nono and Luciano Berio. In 2010 Noseda made the first-ever recording of Dallapiccola's Partita with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

More unique listening experiences
The next concert in the 'unique listening experiences' series is an intimate Late Night concert on 1 December about love and loss, conducted by Barbara Hannigan, in close cooperation with creative partner Pierre Audi. On 9 February 2023, honorary guest conductor Iván Fischer will lead the orchestra from the centre of the Main Hall, with the audience seated in among the orchestra players. On 30 June and 1 July, Tan Dun will conduct the world premiere of his Requiem for Nature in the Gashouder venue, another collaboration with Pierre Audi.
