String Fling

Twenty young musicians who previously participated in the Concertgebouworkest Young summer project came together in Amsterdam last month, forming a string orchestra under the name String Fling. They performed at a number of special locations.

Hailing from various European countries, the musicians all participated in one of the four past editions of Concertgebouworkest Young. String Fling allowed them to share their love for music and their experiences with Young, while further developing their musical and social skills. They received masterclasses from members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and under the direction of first violinist Borika van den Booren-Bayon they worked on a concert program featuring the Serenade for Strings by Josef Suk and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony.

The young musicians then performed at a number of special locations. In addition to private concerts at the Asylum Seekers Centre Dronten, at a music school in Purmerend, and at the Amsterdam office of Booking.com they gave two public concerts: at Amsterdam UMC hospital and in the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s Amsterdam Hall.

In this way, the young musicians were stimulated to continue their work as ambassadors for classical music, which they took up at the first four editions of Concertgebouworkest Young.

Concertgebouworkest Young

Since 2019, Young has been the international youth orchestra for young talented musicians who deserve some support. Dozens of former members now study at conservatories, have formed ensembles and organize concerts. The fifth edition of Young will take place in the summer of 2025.
